6/30/2006 - Credit card boycott

http://www.astroblahhh.com/activism/creditcardboycott.shtml

I am curious as to what people think of this boycott of credit cards. So, what do you think?

Get that bad entry removed as soon as you can. I was just denied on my application to rent an apartment because of "insufficient credit," even though I provided excellent landlord references and proof of adequate income. The bad credit was from old credit cards I had stopped using years ago, but my rent payment record is spotless. Did not matter.

There was also a story in the news recently about a qualified applicant who was denied a job at Harvard University because of bad credit from credit cards.

see:

These credit snooping practices only increase the divide between the rich and the rest of us, because it is ordinary people who typically get bad credit reports. The rich can always hire lawyers and accountants to "take care" of their bad debt records. The rest of us have to fight an uphill battle in yet another arena.

Well-said. I totally agree. Thanks for your comments, the link, and the tip.

By the way, thanks for, and congratulations on, being the first commenter on this post. It's great to finally get some feedback on this page... :-)

That credit check snooping is definitely pretty alarming. I wonder if that might be one reason why no one even called me regarding a job, back when I was still trying to apply for jobs.

I'm going to add that link to the credit card boycott page.

Good luck with everything - I hope everything works out for you. Thanks again.

I am so glad I found this website!!! I will be commenting further in the near future.
I have a FICO score of 700, with no delinquencies or late payments, etc. on file. Yet my interest rates are being raised to 24% for everyday use and being switched to a variable rate. The default rate is even much higher...32%! They say I can reject this increase, but then I can no longer use the card. Does this make sense?
I will expand on some of my experiences later, but something has to be done about these credit card companies!!! I plan to boycott all cards as soon as I get them paid off. But there needs to be legislation against this kind of practice and discrimination, don't you agree? I'm going back to good 'ol cash only.

Hi, nice to hear from you! :-)

That's terrible that they're raising your rates. It's especially unfair since it's sounds like you've been a model customer, paying everything on time.

Not if they want to keep their customers... :-)

But on a legal level, currently, I'm guessing they can probably get away with it, because so many credit cards' terms state that they can change the terms (including interest rates) at any time, for any reason. They're out of control.

Looking forward to it. :-)

Definitely.

Excellent. Same here... :-)

Yes, indeed. :-)

Thanks for your comment. Best wishes.

Ok, I did some research on this and heres the deal. When the repukes in congress passed the Bankruptsy bill the CC's saw $$ in there faces. But, its not panning out. Whats funny is the reverse is happening. Think about this: Amex clear card..no fees? how can they do it? They attract good people who pay back there debt. Why? because if you have good credit and get screwed by chase for forgetting a payment,if you CAN leave chase, you do, but if you cant because you have no more credit left, you stay with chase, get screwed w/fees and 30% int and you end up never paying and go bankrupt. So who wins? Am ex who got there money back and actually made int. Fees like those are for people who dont pay back. Its freaking stupid. If theres all those fees its because they loan to people who never pay.

Hi, thanks for your comment. :-)

Yep, the credit card companies who charge all these fees are pretty stupid, all right. I agree, they're totally shooting themselves in the foot.

Probably if the credit card companies didn't give people such a hard time, a lot fewer people would end up so financially ruined (or worse) that they end up incapable of paying the credit card companies back at all.

November 3, 2009: I'm calling for a four-day boycott on all credit card purchases, the four days following Thanksgiving, from Black Friday to Cyber Monday. Use cash instead! Why? Have you read or heard what the credit card companies are doing before Obama's new anti-usury laws come into effect? The credit card companies and banks are stepping up the usury! They're raising rates on loyal, financially responsible customers, and dropping accounts that don't produce enough business or enough fees! That is, if you use your card responsibly and occasionally, they don't want you! What ever happened to "the customer first"? Or "the customer is always right"? Show them that you matter and you deserve respect. Boycott! No thanks to usury!

Sorry it took so long for me to approve the preceding comment.

It's rather rare that anyone posts comments here, so I had stopped checking for new comments, and thus didn't see the previous comment until just today.

I've been rather neglecting my entire website (not just the credit card boycott page). Someday I'm going to have to do a lot of updating, once I'm a bit less busy with other stuff in my life.

Thanks for posting, and I hope the four-day boycott went well.

I have a forum now:

The Eryss.Com Forum

Anyone still interested in posting comments at this blog is invited to post them at the forum!

I guess you can still post comments at this blog too, but, comments here probably won't get as much attention as they will at the forum.

Also, people so seldom post comments here, I seldom even check to see if any comments need approving. Sorry about the sometimes very long delays!
